My New Dog

The woman that my mom carpool with owns a dog. Her daughter, Arianna, was having a birthday party last Saturday, June 2. Naturally my mom and I were invited because she is friends with the woman she carpools with and the daughter thinks of my mom as her mom. My aunt and cousin were also invited so that they could get to meet my mom’s friend.

My mom and I got to the party first to help setup the decorations and food. Later after a few people started showing up and eating my aunt and cousin showed up. When they did we all ate. After we ate my aunt and cousin were asking about the dog. They wanted to see him. My mom went to look for him and found him tied up to a tree behind the garage. The four of us then went to the back of the garage to see him. My aunt and cousin decided to remove him from there and bring him to the backyard so that he can roam around and see everyone. They would not leave him alone the whole time they were there.

After we had the cake and Arianna opened her presents my aunt and cousin took the dog for a walk. While walking him he kept going to my aunt’s car. He wanted her to take him with her. She and my cousin kept trying to get my mom to ask and convince her friend to let us adopt the dog. My mom talked to her friend, her daughter and husband and they all said we could take the dog.

The dog was too skinny and his eyes were red. He is so nervous and jumpy around other people. My mom’s friend just leaves him in the garage with nothing but dry food and water. His water bowl is always dirty. He has no bed or toys.

My mom and I took him home. My aunt, cousin and I gave him a bath. My aunt brought has two little Maltese so she brought over one of their beds and some of their toys for him to use and play with. She also brought him some of their dry food which is healthier than the cheap one from Aldi’s that they were feeding him. He slept in my bed that night. The next day they came by and brought some drops for his eyes and stuff to clean his eyes. He could not even see out of his eyes. He kept squinting them. He kept trying to hump me, lick me all over, and bite me. He follows me all over the house and would not leave me alone. We took him to Pet Smart and got him a tag with his name and our phone number on it (my mom’s friend told us he was born on Christmas day so I came up with the name Nicholas (Nick) after Santa Claus (St. Nicholas (Nick)) because my aunt suggested Kringle after Santa Claus (Kris Kringle)), a collar, and some treats. My aunt gave us a harness and leash to use so we didn’t have to buy one.

On Monday, we took him to the vet to have his eyes checked up. The doctor said that he has a cut in his cornea and that he was underweight. I was given medicine to give to him for the pain and drops to put in the eyes. He keeps scratching and biting my mom and I when we give him the drops.

In the morning when my mom takes him for walks before she goes to work he doesn’t want to go with her. He keeps trying to go back upstairs to my bedroom and look for me or if he is outside walking with her he wants to come back home and look for me. He is still jumpy and nervous around other people but with me he follows me everywhere and tries to hump me. He is not fixed but I’ve been trying to teach him not to hump me or bite me.

He also has this habit of going up the dining table whenever we are eating. My aunt bought us this little crate thing to put him into whenever he does that or whenever he is bad to try and teach him that whenever he does something bad he gets locked up inside it. We had to put him in there tonight because he scratched my arm and bit my nose when we tried to put drops in his eyes. The only way I got him to eat is by opening his mouth and putting a piece of dry food in it and closing his mouth until he eats it. Then I put some dry food on his food mat and he would roll his head on it before he eats it.

His bark is so cute. He just gives out a little “arf.” He is so good in car rides. He just lays there but most of the time he just sleeps. He also loves to lay on a pillow. He either curls up on top of it or he lays his head on it like a person. Overall, he is a good dog and I’m glad he at least takes to me because he doesn’t with other people. Imagine my mom and I adopting a dog that does take to either of us. Taking care of him would be difficult if he runs and hides from us.

I have taken some pictures and videos of him which I will post some time next week.
